What started as a Hack Week project to help our stakeholders feel more comfortable using Figma, turned into a labor of love. Over the course of several years, I've iterated on and expanded the content of this 'choose your own adventure' style tutorial to help engineers, product managers, and content designers feel comfortable jumping in to Figma with us.
I was also asked by the director of content design to create a spin-off tutorial for the her team and present it in their bi-weekly meetings. I created two sessions worth of content, the first focusing on how to best utilize Figma from the lens of a content designer, and the second session focusing on how to utilize auto layout. The two main goals for this version was to help content designers get more comfortable using Figma for their writing and secondly, to teach them how to be more involved with design explorations by utilizing our design system and incorporating responsive design principles.
I was asked by a team of designers to join them with the goal of improving the designer and developer working relationship as well as improving the handoff process. I led the research efforts for this initiative, conducting interviews with developers from teams around Rocket to explore opportunities around Figma and DevMode competency, communication preferences, and their overall experience working with design.
One day it hit me: every design team at Rocket probably does something better than every other team, but due to silos, we may not have visibility on it to incorporate those strategies or patterns into our work.
I reached out to a few designers who I know operate at a high level and asked them to share some of their recent work with me. They highlighted areas they believe their team excels in, whether that be discovery, user flows, UI design, developer handoff, or design critiques.
I brought in a few other designers to help me build a repository for these best practices, and then shared our work with leadership. Once we received feedback from our design leadership, this repository of best practices was shared with the broader design team where others can view and contribute.
